Exemption for 16-Hour Short-Haul Operations (Big Day)
If a driver meets the eligibility criteria, you can authorize them to invoke the 16-Hour Short-Haul Exemption (Extended Workday) as per §395.1(o).
- Extends the allowable shift time for the driver from 14 hours to 16 hours for the specified day.
- Triggers the display of a banner on the Hours of Service (HOS) log, serving as a visual indicator of the exemption activation.
Impact on Driver Behaviour
- To invoke the exemption, the driver navigates to the Daily Log within the app, taps on the 16-Hour Short-Haul exemption, and designates the specific time within the shift when the exemption is to be applied. It's essential to note that the exemption can only be claimed during the cycle to which it is applied.
- The exemption displays as a remark in the Daily Log and in the DOT Inspection log.
- Instead of a 14:00 hour shift dial, the shift dial displays a 16:00 hour dial.
